Zum Fisherman Restaurant Review

The Zum Fisherman restaurant has been here for well over a decade. Set with a rather barren landscape to the front around the entrance to Santa Maria, from afar you maybe put off in this secluded location. If so, you’ll be missing a rather gem of a treat. What3Words resists.tougher.degrading will take you to their front door.

If you haven’t guessed already from the name, the restaurant is owned by a German husband and wife team Uwe and Marina Thom from Berlin, which specialises in locally caught fish. You will find Uwe on the pier in the morning sourcing his catch of the day.

The one aspect of the Zum Fisherman is the simplicity and consistency of cuisine. Forget about the vast array of fish on the menu, you have to ask what is recommended that day. Your fish will be served with vegetables and rice. Bread and a rather twangy garlic butter is served as a cover with a selection of wines. Of course, it’s a bottle of Chã Fogo Branco all the time for me.

Although the hosts speak good English, it’s a lot better than my German but the waiting staff speak perfect English. The restaurant is set with shells set in plaster with netting and other sea going paraphernalia and with anything German, stereotypically clean and fresh.

The restaurant is highly ranked and regularly recommended but as it is located off the beaten track, it’s not overly populated with diners. You’re bound to get a table. Certainly recommend.
